I have lived on San Juan Island for 35 years, and together with my husband have raised a family here. Cool Place of the Month 
South Beach, everyone's favorite. This is where you go to see the waves come crashing on the shore if it is a windy day, to build a shack out of driftwood for the kids, or just give the dogs a good walk. It's perfect for winter storm watching. In warmer months, I pick up rocks of every color at Southbeach and pop them in the rock polisher. Southbeach is on San Juan Island, and is part of the National Historic Park of American Camp. You drive south on Cattle Point Road into the park at Pickett's Lane. Note, there is no camping at this park.

 
Yes, OK, we get a little snow each winter and  in January, we had it.  Today, February 4, it is sunny and bright and warm!  Check out the view page for photos of what it is like in the San Juan Islands this month: old and new photos. 

• How To Get to San Juan Island 
  Part of the fun of visiting the San Juan islands is getting here! Unless you own a boat or a plane, you might keep a copy of this Washington State Ferry Schedule handy for when the urge strikes you to just get away from it all. Don't forget, the schedule changes four times a year. Go online and make sure you have the right times. And this is one thing that makes living on an island entirely different than living on the mainland (as we call it.) It requires a nice relaxing and scenic ferry ride for most of us to return from the chaos of the mainland. Also, I believe that being surrounded by water instills a sense of community in all the residents of San Juan Island.

• Here are some  things I appreciate about living here:

There is no anonymity: You (and your kids) will not want your reputation to suffer, so you put a lid on your anger and make reasonable arguments, you negotiate, you look toward the compromise.   You'll see your neighbors again, for sure-at the grocery store, the library, or the high school game!

 Animals Rule: The whales that visit our waters are magnificent, intelligent mammals we love. We pamper our dogs. We are softies for wildlife - deer, foxes, bunnies and eagles, (oh no, this one got the salmon).

 People Care about Each Other: Opening doors at the grocery store, slowing down for jaywalkers to cross the street, you get the idea. 

 An island of Resources: Intelligent people who have travelled and had wonderful experiences in their former lives retire here.  They might once have been famous, but on San Juan they are your friendly neighbor.



• When to come? The best day to come with a car is not Friday, and the best day to leave in a car is not Sunday. You can walk onto the ferry without your car almost any time. You can also fly a regularly scheduled flight, a charter, or a seaplane. You can motor or sail up on your boat.
