You'll be happy to know that on San Juan Island we have two big national parks (American Camp and British Camp - but you cannot camp at either one of them). At the parks there are miles of beaches, hiking trails - even places to park a boat or dig clams. The weather is excellent for Western Washington, with half as much rainfall as Seattle. On San Juan Island the ferry will bring you to our small, main street town called Friday Harbor. Merchants here will learn to call you by name and you will learn to recognize and greet several of the Everpresent Dogs. There are many great places to eat for people who like vegetarian fare, seafood, ethnic food, or the usual. As soon as you get out of town, the island becomes very rural. Do you like whales? There is a whale museum, a whale watch park, the tour boats as well as rental kayaks to give you the opportunity to view Orca whales swimming freely in their natural environment. They filmed Free Willy 2 on San Juan Island and Lopez. Boating, sailing, and skin diving are popular pursuits. Many creative people gather together to sing, act, or dance. Famous writers and talented artists have been inspired by the beautiful San Juan Island atmosphere.
As you might expect, reclusive people are often drawn to an island. Privacy is valued on San Juan Island. There is a little bit of the escapist in all of us. Many people here are also a bit eccentric. The island seems to reward people for their differences. After many years of living here and being praised for your individuality, you find yourself turning into a real character! Would you like to give it a try?
